MEXICO'S LAKE EL SALTOHello everyone, I just returned from taking a group of ten people to El Salto for two and a half days of fishing at Angler's Inn, our premier fishing spot in Mexico. To say fishing was fantastic would be a huge understatement. We arrived at the lake Friday afternoon and headed for the boats to get a half day of fishing in. When we returned to the lodge the stories started flying, how big? Oh 9 lbs. was my largest, I caught an 8-1/2, I caught a 7.
Ok, ok but what about numbers? To many to count, I already knew that myself but I wanted to hear it from everyone else. Not only is El Salto now considered a premium trophy lake but the numbers are back also. For the next two days the story was the same, big numbers, plus big fish. By the end of the trip not one spinnerbait was left alive, even the titanium baits took a beating, even they can take only so much abuse.
Plastics were equally effective, in sizes from 6 inch on up to 12. And now the fun part, the topwater action was, was, was, well there just isn't any words to describe it. The best way is by a little story. While fishing one evening, one of my guests started fishing a topwater bait, and the action was fast. While making one cast towards shore, a fish hit the bait and while trying to set the hook he flipped his bait back over the boat to the lake side where another fish hit the bait, he again tried to set the hook, missed the fish and his bait ended up back on the shore side of the boat.
Well, what can I say, the minute the bait hit the water another fish hit the lure and he proceeded to miss that fish. After missing that fish he just reeled in the lure, sat down in the boat, looked at the guide and mumbled, "cervaca por favor". I wish that would have been captured on video, it would have looked like he was swatting mosquitoes with his rod. By the end of the trip we determined that well over 100 fish per boat per day were caught, with five boats in the party that adds up to over 500 fish a day, with many of them in the 3 to 6 lb. range.
All I can say folks, is EL Salto is alive and well, and kicking out bass by the buckets. If you have ever considered fishing Mexico for largemouth, do it!! You will be glad you did. I can't wait to get back down there in May. I would love to take you with me. Bye for now, Mike.
